The gut–brain axis in vertebrates: implications for food intake regulation

نویسندگان

چکیده

ABSTRACT The gut and brain are constantly communicating influencing each other through neural, endocrine immune signals in an interaction referred to as the gut–brain axis. Within this communication system, gastrointestinal tract, including microbiota, sends information on energy status brain, which, after integrating these inputs, transmits feedback tract. This allows regulation of food intake physiological processes occurring motility, secretion, digestion absorption. Although extensive literature is available mechanisms governing between mammals, studies axis vertebrates scarce often limited a single species, which may not be representative for obtaining conclusions entire group. Review aims compile birds, reptiles, amphibians fish, with special focus its involvement and, lesser extent, digestive processes. Additionally, we will identify gaps knowledge that need filled order better understand functioning significance such non-mammalian vertebrates.

Food Intake Regulation in Birds: the Role of Neurotransmitters and Hormones

BACKGROUND: Neurotransmitters (NTS) are endogenous chemicals secreted from neural terminals into the synaptic cleft of the chemical neurons in order to affect their receptors. NTS play vital physiological role as st...

Regulation of food intake in the goldfish.

Goldfish were trained to press a lever. This response was followed by the delivery of a pellet of food. The fish were then allowed continuous access to the lever under controlled conditions, and their food intake was measured. Goldfish distribute their feeding responses fairly evenly over time, within the limits of the lighting cycle. Some fish eat mainly at night, some during the day, and othe...

Evidence for Leptin Regulation of Food Intake

The adipocyte hormone leptin regulates body weight in mice by decreasing food intake and increasing energy expenditure. Whether leptin is of physiological importance for these processes in humans is, however, not clear. We therefore studied the relation between leptin and habitual food intake in 64 healthy postmenopausal women. Dietary habits were assessed with a modified diet history method. B...

Gastrointestinal regulation of food intake.

Despite substantial fluctuations in daily food intake, animals maintain a remarkably stable body weight, because overall caloric ingestion and expenditure are exquisitely matched over long periods of time, through the process of energy homeostasis. The brain receives hormonal, neural, and metabolic signals pertaining to body-energy status and, in response to these inputs, coordinates adaptive a...
